Laplink Gold is a legacy remote control and file transfer software designed to move data securely between PCs, especially over dial-up, network, or internet connections. While newer cloud solutions exist, Laplink Gold remains a benchmark for secure, direct PC-to-PC synchronization without middleman servers.

Here is how to set up and complete a secure remote data migration using Laplink Gold. Phase 1: Prerequisites & Security Setup

Install Software: Install the identical version of Laplink Gold on both the Host (source) and Guest (destination) computers.

Firewall Exceptions: Open the designated Laplink TCP/IP ports (historically port 1547) in your Windows Defender or third-party firewall.

Set Authentication: On the Host PC, navigate to the Security Settings to create a specific username, strong password, and define strict folder access permissions. Phase 2: Establishing a Secure Connection Launch Laplink: Open the application on both computers.

Initiate Connect: On the Guest PC, click the Connect icon or press Ctrl + N.

Choose Media: Select your connection method (e.g., Internet/Network for TCP/IP, or Cable/Modem).

Enter Address: Type the IP address or host name of the Host PC.

Authenticate: Enter the pre-configured security credentials when prompted to establish the encrypted tunnel. Phase 3: Moving the Data Safely

Open File Transfer: Select the File Transfer tool from the main dashboard to open a split-screen window (Host files on one side, Guest files on the other).

Select Target: Navigate to the specific source files on the Host and the destination folder on the Guest.

Use SmartXchange: Click SmartXchange instead of a standard copy-paste. This feature ensures safety by transferring only new or updated files, preventing accidental overwrites.

Execute Transfer: Click the transfer arrow. Laplink utilizes proprietary error-checking to ensure files do not corrupt during transit.

Verify Transfer: Review the transfer log window to confirm all packets successfully landed on the destination drive.
